A few years back I was privileged to participate in a long-overdue family celebration. We met at grandpas in Old Town Eureka Springs. Over a spread of hors d’oeuvres and Argentine Malbec, we began discussing birthday festivities. Not so much as a casual mention of turning 35 sent my sister into roaring laughter.
She turned to me and asked, “Seriously Kate?” To which I appropriately responded, “What?” “You’re not turning 35,” she said, “You’re turning 34 fool!” I must admit, I had to take a minute to calculate. After a rage of laughter, I began thinking. Honestly, who cares? I cared so little, I forgot.
Age isn’t a number, it’s a feeling.
Much like numbers on a scale. It doesn’t matter what the numbers read. It’s all about where you are in mind, body, and soul.
American culture glorifies milestone birthdays. A child’s first birthday generally entails a celebration of outlandish proportions. 13 marks a turning point in growth and development. At 18, one can legally purchase tobacco, or in many countries, alcoholic beverages. And let’s not forget the grandiose 21st birthday, celebrating the ability to officially order your first craft beer. Birthdays at these ages are truly celebrated!
But what happens after the 21st milestone is rather peculiar. Especially for us ladies. Suddenly the celebrating turns into denial and don’t tell anyone!
What’s that all about?
I vividly recall my 30th birthday. Weeks prior to the “dirty-thirty” I was bombarded with negative commentary. 20 and 30-somethings started coming out of the woodwork announcing their repugnance for the alleged doomsday. This baffled me. I was exceptionally enthusiastic about my 30’s— and rightfully so. ’30s brought some serious accomplishments!

What My 30’s Brought
- Cancer (whooped that ass)
- Met (and married) my best friend
- Baby on the way
- Business successes
- Growth
- Forgiveness
- Security
Just to name a few.
Hello 40’s!
This year marks my 40th! And as you can imagine, I’m even MORE excited for my ’40’s!
How does it feel to be 40?
GLORIOUS! My sister and I are spending the day/week parading through the mountains of North Carolina— horseback riding, hiking, reflecting, relaxing. I honestly couldn’t be happier.
Whatcha got planned for the decade?
Family time. With baby on the way, it’s prime time to invest even more energy in my family (both extended and immediate).
Business success. Sure, business has been moving in the right direction, and I’m certainly feeling more fulfilled in my purpose work. But I’m ready for some serious growth and expansion!
Debt relief. I’m OVER student loans and living beyond my means. This decade I’m determined to achieve financial freedom.
Travel. Let’s not forget about the adventure. There are still plenty of hot spots lingering on the ol’ bucket list.
A Word on Aging Graciously
So I gotta say, to all the ladies out there contributing to the negativity associated with aging: don’t waste a moment of your precious life worrying about sagging tits and varicose veins.
Cause you know what?
All that stress sure ain’t helping things. 🙂
Okay but honestly, aging is just a great big opportunity to love yourself even more. Yea your body is evolving, but so is your mind, your strength, your determination, and whatever else you’ve been actively working on over the past 10 years of your life.
I’ve only been here for a quick minute, but I’m positive ’40s are going to be the BEST yet! Now more than ever, I’m feeling physically empowered, mindfully self-assured, and emotionally stable. Last year’s work will inevitably lead to this year’s strength and progression. I’m grateful to turn another year wiser. Let the festivities begin!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on aging gracefully. Drop me a line in the comments below.
